This poster was salvaged by a vice president of the Students for a Democratic Society at an abandoned Freedom House in Mississippi. Freedom Houses were established by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to provide havens for African Americans working to regain their right to vote. Some Freedom Houses were set up as storefronts with hidden meeting rooms in back to teach citizenship classes to blacks and help them maneuver through the Byzantine maze of Mississippi voting regulations.
Lynching of two unidentified African American males, white man squatting, hides face as he stills corpses.
Signed in negative: "Pruitt Photo." Original photograph circa 1910. Lithographed poster circa 1965. 10 1/4 x 16 1/4"
